EOD specialists were called to Gatwick airport after being thrown into lockdown when a vehicle breached a security perimeter fence and drove around the wrong way on the airports service road this evening
The driver then left the vehicle with two suitcases and made off into the terminal, causing panic to passengers at the airport.
Officers from Sussex Police have cleared the area and called in EOD specialists to examine the bags involved in the incident.
The man has since been arrested by Police and an investigation has been launched.
The police were seen making cars reverse at the drop-off point, back to exit through the car park.
In a statement on Twitter, Gatwick Police said:
‘We are currently dealing with an incident at Gatwick Airport.
A man has been detained. A cordon is in place at the drop-off parking area at the North Terminal, as a precaution.
Sussex police confirmed they have now stood down the cordon which was in place while they dealt with the incident at the drop-off area at Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal.
Police have also confirmed that the man who was detained by police following the incident, is not being treated as terror-related.
They would like to thank the public for their patience whilst they dealt with the incident.
