Balcony Fire at Portsmouth Flats Prompts Smoking Safety Warning

Firefighters were called to an eight-storey apartment block in Portsmouth this evening after a fire broke out on a third-floor balcony.

Crews attended the incident on Cross Street shortly after 10pm, where they tackled the balcony fire and made the area safe.

The fire is believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.
No injuries have been reported.

Following the incident, home fire safety visits were carried out at the occupant’s property, with further visits scheduled for neighbouring homes tomorrow morning.

Station Manager Stu Vince said:

“If you smoke, it’s absolutely vital to make sure your cigarette is completely out before you dispose of it. Something as simple as a cigarette that hasn’t been properly extinguished can quickly lead to a serious fire. Smoking materials must always be disposed of carefully and responsibly, especially in flats or properties with balconies where fire can spread rapidly.”

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has reminded residents that smoking remains one of the leading causes of fatal house fires.

Residents are being urged to fully extinguish cigarettes, use a proper ashtray, never leave lit cigarettes unattended, and dispose of smoking materials safely.

Anyone who discovers a fire should call 999 immediately.
