Man Jailed After Trying To Steal £150 Worth Of Alcohol From Farnborough Shell
A 38-year-old man has been jailed after he attempted to steal alcohol and assaulted a shop worker inside a Farnborough store.
Robert Lennon, 38, previously of Forest End, Waterlooville, tried to steal nine bottles and two cans of alcohol, worth around £150, from Shell on Farnborough Road on 23 January.
When a member of staff, a man in his 50s, confronted him inside the shop, Lennon assaulted him.
Officers launched an investigation and Lennon was later charged with attempted theft from a shop and assault by beating.
At the time he was charged, Lennon was already in prison after being jailed for 32 weeks for stealing watches worth more than £7,000 from a shop in Rushden, Northamptonshire, in February.
Lennon pleaded guilty to the Farnborough offences and appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 5 May.
He was handed an additional 12-week custodial sentence, bringing his total sentence to 44 weeks.
PC Nilam Rai, from the Farnborough Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:
“We want to be absolutely clear – shoplifting and assaults on workers will not be tolerated in the district.
“Our team takes all reports of shoplifting extremely seriously and I hope this result reassures the local community that we will do all we can to put offenders before the courts.”
Shop owners and staff are being urged to continue reporting shoplifting incidents to police.
Reports can be made by calling 101 or online via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website.
