Man Jailed for Eight Years After Brutal Bishopstoke Assault Left Victim With Life-Changing Injuries

A 45-year-old man from Bishopstoke has been jailed for eight years after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following a violent attack that left a victim with life-changing injuries.

Warren Stephen Gawthorpe, 45, of Fox Close, Bishopstoke, was found guilty of Section 18 grievous bodily harm on 12 February following a six-day trial at Winchester Crown Court.

He returned to the same court for sentencing on Wednesday, 3 June, appearing via video link from prison.

During the hearing, sentencing had to continue in Gawthorpe’s absence after a series of outbursts. He later walked out of the room where the video link was being conducted.

As well as serving an eight-year prison sentence, Gawthorpe will remain on licence for a further four years after his release. He was also made subject to an indefinite restraining order prohibiting any direct or indirect contact with both the victim and a witness involved in the case.

The conviction relates to an incident that took place at Gawthorpe’s home on Saturday, 12 April 2025.

At approximately 12.30pm, the victim, a man in his 30s, was inside the property when he was pushed down a flight of stairs before being repeatedly punched and kicked.

The attack resulted in the victim suffering a broken eye socket and other serious injuries. The court heard that the injuries continue to affect him on a daily basis and have had a lasting impact on his life.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Merriman, who led the investigation at the time, said:

«”This was an extremely serious incident, in which the victim suffered serious, life-changing injuries.»

«”I am relieved for him, as he continues to recover from those injuries, that justice has now been served.»

«”Gawthorpe is now behind bars and can no longer harm anyone else.»

«”I must also place on my record my thanks to the victim for his support and bravery throughout our investigation, as well as his determination to see justice handed down.»

«”Huge thanks also go to the witness to the incident, who called police to report it and helped us achieve the outcome we have.”»

The sentence brings to an end a lengthy criminal investigation and court process, with police praising both the victim and key witnesses for their assistance in securing the conviction.
