Fire crews from across the New Forest were called to a fire involving around 40 tonnes of household rubbish
Firefighters used water jets to control the blaze at a waste processing site in Milford Road, Pennington, near Lymington.
People living nearby were advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to smoke in the area.
The fire was reported shortly before 5:00pm and was well-alight when the first crews arrived.
Fire engines from Lymington, New Milton, Beaulieu and Romsey attended, as well as water carriers from Eastleigh and Ringwood, and a command support vehicle from Portchester.
By 9.30pm the incident was scaling down, with relief crews from St Mary’s and Hightown working with the site’s staff to deal with hotspots.
The stop message was received at 12.31am and the incident was handed over to a site manager.
