Police Clash with Portsmouth Fans as Millwall Supporters Escorted to Trains

Police were forced to respond swiftly last night after around 200 Portsmouth fans broke through a small cordon near Fratton Station, prompting a major security operation.

The incident occurred following Portsmouth’s 1-0 defeat to Millwall in the rescheduled Championship fixture at Fratton Park.With tensions already high, officers had been overseeing a planned operation to safely escort Millwall fans to awaiting trains at Fratton Train Station footbridge.

However, as the away supporters were being moved, a group of Portsmouth fans managed to breach a police cordon on Selbourne Terrace in an attempt to get to Millwall fans chanting from Fratton Stations Footbridge, leading to a rapid response from officers.

Around 30 police officers rushed through the crowds in an attempt to regain control, pushing Portsmouth fans back towards Claremont Road.

A temporary hold was then placed on the movement of home supporters while police worked to ensure Millwall fans were safely loaded onto their trains.

The heavy police presence, which included officers from the Thames Valley Mounted Branch, was part of a pre-planned operation to prevent clashes between the two fanbases.

However, the breach of the cordon led to chaotic scenes, with authorities forced to act quickly to avoid further escalation.

It remains unclear if any arrests were made, but police are expected to review CCTV footage and body-worn camera recordings to assess any criminal behavior.

The match, which had initially been postponed in November due to a power cut, marked Millwall’s third visit to Fratton Park this season, following an earlier Carabao Cup tie in August.
