Victoria Road South in Southsea turned into an unexpected crash site this yesterday after a marked police car and a van collided leaving many questioning whether the officers behind the wheel should consider a refresher course in road safety.
The incident occurred around 2.50 pm on Monday, February 24, when a police vehicle, allegedly responding to an emergency, managed to find itself in a rather non-emergency like predicament crashing into a van instead of arriving at its intended destination.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed that the officer driving the police car suffered minor injuries, while, miraculously, no one else was hurt.
“At around 2.50 pm on Monday, February 24, officers were responding to an emergency incident in a marked police car. While traveling along Victoria Road South, a collision occurred involving the police car and a van.

A police officer, the driver of the vehicle, suffered minor injuries. No one else was injured. The road was closed while officers from the Roads Policing Unit carried out an investigation at the scene.
”However, social media had its own take on the situation, with eyewitnesses claiming the police car went through a red light without using sirens or giving any warning leaving the van driver with no clue that a high-speed game of dodgems was about to take place.
Online commentators didn’t hold back, branding the officers involved as “reckless” and questioning how a trained driver could forget the basic rule of using sirens when charging through a busy main road.
The road closure caused delays and frustration for local drivers, some of whom sarcastically suggested that the police should be fined for causing an obstruction just as they would be if the roles were reversed.
As the Roads Policing Unit continues its investigation, one can only hope the officers involved brush up on the Highway Code before their next “emergency” maneuver.
