Person dies after being hit by train at Hilsea station, police confirm
A person has died after being struck by a train at Hilsea railway station in Portsmouth over the weekend, police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 4pm on Sunday (May 3) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. The incident prompted a major response, with police, paramedics and fire crews all in attendance.
All rail lines between Havant and Portsmouth Harbour were temporarily blocked, leading to widespread disruption, with services delayed, cancelled or amended. A cordon was put in place while emergency teams dealt with the incident.
A spokesperson for British Transport Police said:
“We were called to Hilsea railway station at 4pm on May 3 to reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
Rail services resumed fully by 6.25pm. Southern Rail apologised for the disruption, confirming that ticket acceptance was arranged with other rail and bus operators.
Passengers delayed by more than 15 minutes may be eligible for compensation through the company’s Delay Repay scheme.
