Murder Investigation Closed After Police Find No Third-Party Involvement In Hartley Road Death
Police have concluded a murder investigation launched after the sudden death of a woman in North End, Portsmouth, after detailed enquiries found no evidence of third-party involvement.
Officers were called to an address in Hartley Road at around 7.40pm on Monday, May 25, after the ambulance service reported the discovery of a woman’s body.
The death of the 55-year-old woman was initially treated as suspicious, and a 60-year-old man from Portsmouth was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was later released on bail while enquiries continued.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now confirmed the investigation has been concluded following thorough testing and further enquiries at the scene.
A police spokesperson said enquiries had “now shown no third-party involvement based on thorough testing at the scene.”
The man who was previously arrested has now been released from bail with no further action.
The woman’s death is now being treated as unexplained, and a file is being prepared for the coroner. Her family has been updated by officers.
At the time of the incident, the road was cordoned off while police carried out their investigation, leaving residents shocked.
Neighbour Robert Cunningham, who has lived in Hartley Road for 28 years, said at the time: “It is the first time ever that we have had an issue of any sort really. This is a quiet little residential street.”
The matter will now be passed to the coroner to determine the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
