Four people have been sentenced in their absence to a total of 65 years’ imprisonment, following a series of violent robberies and burglaries

However all four – plus two others linked to the crime spree across Sussex and Surrey – remain at large and are wanted by police.

A number of homeowners were subjected to threats and violence, and large quantities of cash, jewellery and personal items were stolen in the seven separate incidents, which occurred in November and December 2018.

Six suspects were identified through extensive investigations which included witness statements, mobile phone analysis, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) hits and evidence gathered through search warrants.

Four of them were arrested and released on court bail pending trial. However, they all absconded before the six-week trial concluded on Tuesday 15 February. Therefore, the trial was heard in their absence and a jury returned 19 guilty verdicts from the 19 offences on the indictment.

They were subsequently sentenced in their absence to a total of 65 years’ imprisonment at Brighton Crown Court on Wednesday 23 February.

Both have links to Lisbon in Portugal, where they were born.

Six of the incidents occurred in Crawley and during one of them, a man was so badly assaulted he sustained 19 broken ribs. The other incident occurred in Epsom, Surrey.

Detective Chief Inspector Jon Robeson, Senior Investigating Officer, said: “This was an incredibly large, complex and lengthy investigation which has had a significant impact on those victims targeted. I commend them for the courage and bravery they have shown throughout this investigation and subsequent trial, and thank them for their assistance in bringing the offenders to justice.

“This series of targeted offences included separate incidents on both Surrey and Sussex policing areas. The organised group of suspects were known to have been commuting from London addresses in order to offend. They subjected homeowners, most of whom were present at the time, to threats and violence, and they stole significant sums of money and property.

“Throughout the investigation, some 10 search warrants were executed by officers from Surrey Police and Sussex Police, supported by The Metropolitan Police. Key evidence in the investigation came from the examination of the suspects’ mobile phones and translation of thousands of electronic communications between one another. These messages demonstrated some of the planning and logistics of offences, including the subsequent distribution and sale of stolen property.

“Two of the organised group – Sanha and Cassama – are still sought for judicial proceedings. We would ask anyone that knows of their whereabouts to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Glengorm.”

Body Found In Search For Missing Andover Man Aidan Bentham Police searching for missing 28-year-old Aidan Bentham from Andover have sadly discovered the body of a man. Officers confirmed the discovery was made this morning (24 May) following ongoing efforts to locate Aidan after he was reported missing earlier this week. Formal identification has not yet taken place, however Aidan’s family have been informed of the development. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said a file will now be prepared for the coroner. The tragic update comes after police issued an urgent appeal on Friday amid growing concerns for Aidan’s welfare. In the original appeal, officers said Aidan had last been seen at around 4.30pm on Thursday 22 May. Police described him as being around 5ft 9ins tall, of a chubby build, with short dark hair, a fair complexion and clean shaven. At the time of his disappearance, he was believed to have been wearing a light-coloured top and tracksuit bottoms, although officers said he may since have changed clothing. The appeal prompted widespread sharing across social media as police and Aidan’s family appealed to the public for information which could help trace him. Following today’s discovery, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary thanked members of the public who shared the earlier appeal and assisted with enquiries during the search operation. The force has now requested that the missing person appeal be removed from public channels. No further details have currently been released.
