A large fire erupted at a recycling centre on Millbank Street late last night, sending thick plumes of smoke across the city and prompting a significant emergency response.
Seven fire engines were dispatched to the scene, along with two aerial ladder platforms, as firefighters from across the region worked through the night to bring the blaze under control.
The fire, which started around 10:30 pm, engulfed a commercial property, creating a hazardous environment and a strong burning smell that spread to nearby areas, including Bond Street.
Residents reported large clouds of smoke billowing over the city as emergency services battled the flames.
Crews from St Mary’s, Hightown, Redbridge, Eastleigh, Portchester, Fareham, Alton, and Basingstoke were called in to help extinguish the fire.
Firefighters used two claw cranes to shift through the burnt rubble, continuing their work into the early hours of the morning.
By 2:00 am, a spokesperson from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service announced that the fire had been brought under control.
“We will shortly be scaling down our presence onsite as the fire has been brought under control,” they said.
“Two fire engines will remain on scene for the time being to continue damping down and dealing with any hotspots.
”Despite the fire being controlled, crews remained cautious, ensuring that the site was secure and any remaining areas of concern were addressed.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage, and investigations are expected to continue.
