Officers responding to reports of a burglary in progress have arrested a man.
It comes after residents at a property on Gage Close in Marchwood were awoken in the early hours of yesterday morning (13 September) after a neighbours garage was being broken into.
A resident had confronted a man outside of the property and detained him until the arrival of police.
A 37-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of burglary and was later released under investigation, pending further enquiries.
A number of items, including personal effects, have been recovered and returned to their rightful owners.
New Forest Chief Inspector Helen Andrews, said: “While we are very appreciative of the member of the public in this instance, in detaining a man who we believe to be involved in the offence, we would always urge members of the public to contact police by dialling 999 immediately if a crime is in progress.
“This will ensure the personal safety of local residents and that they don’t inadvertently come to any harm
