Police are appealing for witnesses after an 85-year-old woman from Portsmouth sadly died after a tragic accident that happened earlier today. The RTC happened at the junction of High Street and Vectis Way Cosham. It is believed that a van travelling into Vectis Way hit the 85-year-old in the collision, which trapped the elderly woman under the vehicle. Emergency services were scrambled to the incident, including 2 fire appliances one from Cosham and 1 from Portchester, Hampshire Constabulary Roads Policing Unit and a Hazardous Area Response Team along with paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service were in attendance. An appeal released by Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘Officers attended the High Street around midday following the collision, involving a white Nissan van.’ ‘Despite best efforts, the pedestrian, an 85-year-old woman from Portsmouth, has been pronounced dead.’ ‘Her family are being supported by officers.’ ‘The van driver, a 61-year-old man from Cosham, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.’ ‘Officers investigating the exact circumstances of the collision are keen to speak with any witnesses or anyone who has dashcam footage.’ If you can assist, please call 101, quoting the reference number 802 of today’s date (October 7). The road has since been reopened.
