Shoplifter Jailed And Banned From Farnborough Stores After Spitting At Staff

A prolific shoplifter has been jailed and handed a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order after a string of offences in Farnborough.

Bobby Robinson, 27, of Ratcliffe Road, Farnborough, attempted to steal £23.50 worth of meat from the Co-op on Fernhill Road on 24 April before being challenged by staff.

He verbally abused workers and then tried to fight a member of the public who asked him to leave.

Robinson continued acting aggressively and spat at a female staff member in her 30s and a man in his 40s. He also punched the man, causing a minor injury to his lip.

Following a scuffle, Robinson was pinned to the ground, but later got up and attempted to damage the man’s car wing mirror outside the shop.

He then fled the area before stealing £11.50 worth of alcohol from Tesco on Chapel Lane.

Police launched an investigation and Robinson was arrested in connection with the incidents.

He was charged with two counts of theft from a shop, two counts of assault by beating and attempted criminal damage.

Robinson pleaded guilty to all offences and was jailed for 13 weeks at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 20 May.

He was also handed a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order, banning him from entering Tesco Express stores in Farnborough and the shop at the BP fuel station on Prospect Road.

Under the order, Robinson must also leave any business immediately if asked to do so by staff. He must place items for purchase into a basket or trolley and present a means of payment for the goods.

Police Sergeant Lee Bishop, from the Farnborough Neighbourhood Policing Team, said Robinson’s behaviour had a “serious and unacceptable impact” on local businesses, staff and the wider community.

He added that spitting at staff and a member of the public was “particularly distressing” and said officers would continue using all available powers, including Criminal Behaviour Orders, to tackle shoplifting and protect businesses.

Shop owners and staff are being urged to continue reporting shoplifting incidents to police by calling 101 or reporting online via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website. If a crime is in progress, call 999.
