Portsmouth Road Rage Attacker Jailed After Brutal Assault Left Motorist With Fractured Cheekbone
A Portsmouth man has been jailed after a violent road rage attack left a motorist with a fractured cheekbone and lasting vision problems.
Archie Phillips, 22, of Braintree Road, Portsmouth, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after carrying out an unprovoked assault on a 57-year-old driver during an incident in Paulsgrove.
The attack happened at around 5pm on Wednesday 2 July 2025. The victim was driving along Hythe Road with his wife and her sister when he stopped to allow traffic through a narrow section of road.
Although an oncoming driver gave way, Phillips, who was behind the victim’s vehicle, became aggressive and shouted at him as they continued towards the junction of Allaway Avenue and Service Road.
Moments later, Phillips pulled alongside the victim’s car, got out of his vehicle and approached the driver’s side. He tried to open the car door before shouting racial abuse, reaching through the open window, grabbing the victim by his shirt and punching him in the face.
The victim suffered a fractured cheekbone, extensive facial bruising and ongoing vision problems. His vehicle was also damaged during the assault.
Phillips fled the scene but was later identified following an investigation by Portsmouth District Investigations officers. He admitted causing grievous bodily harm without intent.
Appearing at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday 19 June, Phillips was jailed for 16 months. He was also made the subject of a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim and two witnesses.
The officer leading the investigation said: “Phillips caused serious injuries to an innocent man who was just trying to go about his day, and he deserves to face jail time for his vile behaviour.
“This was an act of unnecessary and unacceptable violence that will not be tolerated in Portsmouth.
“We will continue to pursue anyone who harms, or threatens the safety of, those who live in and visit our city, and we will ensure they are put before the courts to face justice for their actions.”
