Police are continuing their investigation after a girl sustained serious injuries following a fail to stop collision in Ipswich

The incident took place yesterday, Thursday 3 February. At just before 7pm police had cause to request a black BMW 116i car to stop on London Road in the town centre, but the driver failed to do so. After a very short time, the BMW car drove into Burlington Road where it collided with a parked Daihatsu Sirion vehicle, containing a family of four people.  An 11-year-old girl, inside the parked car, sustained a serious head injury as a result of the collision and has been taken by ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for treatment. The girl’s condition remains in a critical but stable condition.

The girl’s mother, father and a second, younger child all went to hospital to be checked over and have now been discharged. They are currently being supported by specially trained family liaison officers. No other members of the public were hurt in the incident.

Officers requested the vehicle to stop, the vehicle made off with officers following and the collision with the parked Daihatsu occurred on Burlington Road.

The male driver of the BMW car fled the scene and ran off in the direction of Civic Drive. The man is described as black, in his 20s, around 5 feet 2 inches tall, slim build. He was wearing a long black padded coat with a white emoji design on the hood, light coloured tracksuit trousers and white trainers. Officers are conducting various lines of enquiry to locate the male including a forensic examination of the BMW vehicle and searching of CCTV footage as police remain concerned for his welfare and are keen to trace his whereabouts.

Detective Superintendent Kerry Cutler said:“This incident took place at a busy time of day with people going shopping, coming home from work or going to and from various after-school clubs.  This could have been any family sat waiting in their car and could have happened to anyone of us so please, if you saw the suspect running away, know who the suspect is or where he maybe please get in touch. We have a number of officers focussed on the search to locate him but we are very keen for people to come forward who may have witnessed what happened and help us to find him.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who was driving in the area at the time and has dashcam footage are asked to contact Suffolk police, quoting reference CAD 335 of yesterday, 3 February.  Also, anybody who has seen a man fitting the description above are asked to contact police.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct as a matter of course in such incidents.
