Action taken to tackle underage sales of alcohol in Romsey

Officers issued one fixed penalty notice following a test purchase operation in Romsey

Hampshire Constabulary’s Licensing Team used two 17-year-old volunteers to visit eight premises in Romsey on Saturday, 26 February.

The purpose of the operation was to test age verification policies and training.

Staff at seven of the premises passed the test by requesting ID and refusing the sale of alcohol to our 17-year-old volunteers.

Staff at one of the premises failed the test. They were issued a £90 fixed penalty notice and given appropriate advice.

The venue that failed the test was the Co-op in Saxon Way.

Licensing officer Colin Pollard said: “We’re pleased that nearly all of the premises passed the test, although it’s disappointing to see that staff at one failed.

“We will look to visit this premises again in the coming months.

“Operations like this one reduce the risk of young people being involved in anti-social behaviour, committing offences or becoming a victim of crime themselves.

“We will continue to run these operations throughout the year to help keep our communities safe.”
