Counterfeit Cash Used To Buy Phones In Fareham Appeal

Police have released an appeal after counterfeit bank notes were allegedly used to buy mobile phones advertised online in Fareham and nearby areas.

Officers would like to speak to two women following an incident on the evening of 12 May, when they attended an address in Fareham to collect a mobile phone that had been listed for sale online.

The pair paid £430 in cash before leaving the address. It was later discovered that the bank notes were counterfeit, and the online profile used by the buyers was deleted.

Police are linking this incident to two similar reports in the area, including one in Bursledon on 25 April and another in Fareham on 26 April. On each occasion, mobile phones advertised online were exchanged for hundreds of pounds in counterfeit cash.

Anyone who recognises the women, or has information that may assist the investigation, is asked to contact police online or call 101, quoting reference 44260223736.

Police are reminding people to be cautious when accepting cash payments for high-value items and to check notes before handing goods over.
