Man Arrested on Suspicion of Murder After Fatal House Fire in Cowes

A murder investigation has been launched after a person died in a house fire in Cowes during the early hours of Friday morning.

Emergency services were called to an address on Ronsons Close at 3:32am on Friday, 26 June, following reports of a serious fire. Police, firefighters and ambulance crews attended the scene, with neighbouring properties evacuated as a precaution while crews worked to bring the blaze under control.

Following the fire, one person was found dead inside the property.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but the person’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.

Police have confirmed the cause of the fire is currently being treated as suspicious.

A 28-year-old man from Ventnor has been arrested on suspicion of murder and arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody while detectives continue their enquiries.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses and are asking anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident, or who has doorbell, dashcam or CCTV footage that may assist the investigation, to come forward.

Residents can expect an increased police presence in the Ronsons Close area over the coming days while the investigation continues. Officers say anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak with uniformed police at the scene.
