Southampton man jailed for more than six years for child sex offences
A 34-year-old Southampton man has been jailed for more than six years after admitting a series of child sex offences.
John Joseph Sullivan, 34, of Wharncliffe Road, was sentenced at Southampton Crown Court on Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to 31 counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, as well as taking, making and distributing indecent images of a child, voyeurism and possession of extreme pornography.
The offences took place during 2023. Sullivan was arrested in January this year before investigators examined his electronic devices, leading to him being charged and remanded in custody.
He has now been sentenced to six years and two months in prison. Upon his release, he will remain on an extended licence for a further three years and 10 months.
The court also imposed a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, while Sullivan will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Aimee Scott-Molloy from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Internet Child Abuse Team praised the courage of the victim and their family throughout the investigation.
She said Sullivan had “stolen the innocence” of the child and welcomed the sentence, adding that it ensures he is no longer able to harm other young people.
She also encouraged anyone who has experienced sexual abuse or has concerns about a child to come forward, stressing that police take such offences extremely seriously and will continue working tirelessly to bring offenders to justice.
Anyone with concerns about child abuse can contact police on 101 or report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Support is also available through the NSPCC and Childline.
