Police seized a BMW in the Fratton area after officers stopped the driver during a search for a stolen moped
Officers said they initially spoke to the driver about the vehicle’s number plates before carrying out routine roadside checks. During the checks, the driver was reportedly unable to confirm who insured the vehicle or identify the policy holder.
According to police, the driver showed officers a WhatsApp message claiming money had been paid to another person for insurance, however this was not accepted as valid proof of cover.
The driver was reported for having no insurance and issued with a fixed penalty notice relating to the vehicle’s number plates.
The BMW was subsequently seized, with recovery costs also incurred.
Police used the incident to remind motorists of the importance of ensuring they are properly insured before driving, warning: “It’s not worth the risk.”
