Woman Jailed After £950 Shoplifting Spree Across Basingstoke Stores
A woman has been jailed for 10 months after stealing more than £950 worth of goods from shops across Basingstoke.
Emma Quinn, 44, of Fairfields Road, Basingstoke, admitted nine counts of theft from a shop after targeting Tesco Express in Kempshott, Hobbycraft in Winchester Road, Boots in Chineham and Co-op in Beggarwood.
Between Saturday 7 March and Tuesday 9 June, Quinn stole items including craft model kits, coffee, chocolate and body sprays during nine separate incidents.
She was sentenced at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 1 July, where a suspended sentence order was activated and she was jailed for 10 months.
Basingstoke Inspector Jim Gallimore said Quinn’s offending had caused significant impact to local businesses, staff and the wider community.
He said: “I want to be clear – this behaviour will not be tolerated in Basingstoke. When items are stolen, businesses must recover the costs which have been lost. This results in shops typically increasing prices, which has a huge impact on the wider public.
“We take all reports of shoplifting extremely seriously and I hope this result reassures the public that we will do all we can to put offenders before the courts.”
Police are continuing to encourage shop owners and staff to report shoplifting offences by calling 101 or using the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website.
If a crime is in progress, call 999.
