Final Push for Kingston Cemetery Lodge Petition as Campaigner Takes Fight to Portsmouth City Council

Final Push for Kingston Cemetery Lodge Petition as Campaigner Takes Fight to Portsmouth City Council
A Portsmouth resident leading a campaign against plans for the historic Kingston Cemetery Lodge is making one final push for support today as the petition enters its final day, having now attracted more than 5,000 signatures.
Paul Newman, who has spent recent days gathering signatures from concerned residents across the city, will be outside Portsmouth City Council from 1pm today collecting support for the campaign and encouraging local people to make their voices heard.
The petition opposes plans for the Grade II listed South Lodge at Kingston Cemetery and calls for the historic building to remain connected to the operation and heritage of the cemetery.
Supporters of the campaign believe the lodge should continue to serve the cemetery and wider community rather than being converted into residential accommodation. Many argue the building would be better suited for use by grounds staff, cemetery workers or other council employees responsible for maintaining the site and supporting visitors.
Others have suggested the building could provide facilities for cemetery users, including a place for reflection, support services, visitor amenities or other community-focused uses that respect the unique and sensitive nature of its surroundings.
Campaigners say Kingston Cemetery is one of Portsmouth’s most important historic sites and a place where thousands of families come to remember loved ones. They believe any future use of the lodge should reflect the character, history and purpose of the cemetery.
With the petition now surpassing 5,000 signatures, supporters say the campaign has gained significant momentum and demonstrates the strength of public feeling surrounding the future of the building.
Paul Newman will be outside Portsmouth City Council from 1pm today for the final day of the petition campaign. Residents who wish to support the effort are encouraged to come along, sign the petition and show their support for protecting the future of the historic Kingston Cemetery Lodge.
Campaigners hope the petition will encourage decision-makers to reconsider the proposals and explore alternative uses that preserve the building’s connection to Kingston Cemetery, its visitors and the wider Portsmouth community.
If you support the campaign, please come down, add your signature and help ensure local voices are heard. Every signature strengthens the message that Portsmouth residents care deeply about the future of this historic landmark.
